The Nuragic heart of Sardinia
A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, Su Nuraxi of Barumini is the most important and best-preserved Nuragic complex in Sardinia, and a true symbol of Nuragic civilisation.
Excavated in the 1950s by the great archaeologist Giovanni Lilliu, the site tells over two thousand years of history, from the Middle Bronze Age to the Roman and early medieval periods.
At its centre stands the main tower, almost 19 metres high, surrounded by smaller towers, courtyards and massive defensive walls.
Around the main fortress extends a vast village of stone huts, some of which served ritual and communal purposes, revealing the social and economic complexity of the Nuragic communities.
The mastery of basalt stonework, the ingenuity of tholos techniques, and the evocative atmosphere of the inner chambers make Su Nuraxi a unique site in the world. Visiting it means immersing yourself in a timeless landscape where archaeology and nature blend into an unforgettable experience.
